Moulin Rouge: Yes We Can-Can!

For more than 130 years, France’s legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret club has been dazzling audiences with its own unique brand of Parisian ooh la la. But behind the red curtain you’re more likely to bump into someone from Middlesbrough than Marseilles.
The Artistic Director is Janet, an ex-dancer from Yorkshire, and a third of her troupe are British too.
With an access-all-areas pass to the inner workings of the Moulin Rouge, this colourful six-part series follows Janet as she heads back to Britain to recruit a new line-up of British dancers to join the Moulin’s high-kicking ensemble.
It’s been a challenging time in the iconic institution’s history. The pandemic had a catastrophic effect on the live-entertainment industry. Numerous clubs didn’t survive, and many dancers left Paris during lockdown and haven’t returned. Janet’s troupe is still low on numbers, so now she’s on the hunt for more Can-Can dancers whose legs can reach their ears. And where better to search than the place she knows best… her hometown of Leeds!
The legendary routine that made the Moulin Rouge famous is the Can-Can - and it demands high kicks, cartwheels and jump splits, which only the most accomplished can pull off. Many dancers come from a classically trained ballet background, but they’ll need more than just great technique to make it on the Moulin’s stage.
Only the very best will meet Janet’s strict standards to secure one of the performance industry’s most coveted and lucrative contracts.
Many of the hopefuls have repeatedly auditioned for her. Twenty two year-old Liverpudlian Erin is hoping it will be third time lucky, while back in Paris, one of Janet’s most accomplished dancers is contemplating her future.
Thirty two year-old Jess, or ‘Tooney’ as she’s known to her fellow dancers, is contemplating life beyond the bright lights, and the home comforts of Warwickshire and a potential career as an estate agent are calling. After 12 years at the Moulin Rouge it’s a huge decision to make… and first she’ll need to summon up the courage to tell Janet.
